About me

Dr. Robert B. Schoene is a pulmonologist who cares for patients with respiratory conditions, including athletes. Schoene serves as head of the pulmonary function and exercise lab and provides consultations at the intensive care unit.

Schoene's long research career includes investigating ventilation control (how air moves in and out of the lungs) and gas exchange (movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and bloodstream), lung injury, exercise physiology and high-altitude medicine. Schoene has also had a long career in teaching, serving as director of the internal medicine residency program at UC San Diego School of Medicine. Schoene, as a volunteer in the National Health Service Corps, practiced family medicine in the Columbia River Gorge for two years.  

Schoene has spent many years rock climbing, and mountaineered in the Himalayas. He was a climber and scientist on the 1981 American Medical Research Expedition to Mt. Everest and in 1983 and 1985 in the Denali Medical Research Project on Mount McKinley.
